Is india backward, and if so, why?
Could Vishal Mangalwadi's recent book, WHY ARE 750 MILLION INDIANS BACKWARD?, turn out to be a polestar, a harbinger of 'good news' to the whole of India? It is indeed time that something on those lines happened in this part of the world to transform it in order to really prepare all of its people for the righteous path, the path that ultimately leads one to the realization of the very purpose of our creation. And for that, we need the unalloyed truth, truth that could open our eyes and our hearts to all the realities of life and death. This great country has suffered enough. This nation of diverse cultures and races has gone through a great deal of denial and of deprivation, of exploitation and of mind-control, through the selfish manipulations of all those who were more 'enlightened' and 'better' placed, the ones who occupied advantageous positions in the society. The 'backward' about whom Mangalwadi speaks of, does not confine merely to the secular, the worldly and the physical aspects of the life of the people as most of India is seized of today. It transcends all of these and leads on to the real subject which every citizen of this country should become familiar with for his very salvation. We are giving below a review of his recent book, released in the first week of this month, November, which fearlessly touches upon some of the very salient features with which every Indian should become aware of as to what has been done to him during the last several millennia to keep him under the “bushel,” either with well-meant ignorance or with a subtle diabolic conspiracy. This book, we feel, if read with an open mind, to whatever ideology or religious beliefs one holds on to, should fully serve the purpose.

The review : “Vishal Mangalwadi has written a new book that truly explores those aspects of Indian culture that keeps a vast majority of our people in perpetual bondage. The book,' Why Are We Backward?' explodes the myths— religious as well as secular—that are promoted as truth to deceive Indian people. At the same time, it offers hope for freedom and progress through the Lord Jesus Christ and the Bible.
The book has been divided into six sections. The first section explores how the religious philosophies in India have enslaved our people, especially their minds. The city of Allahabad, for instance, hosts major religious events. All the sages go there, many stalwarts have lived there, but none of them started educational institutions to help people move forward, materially as well as intellectually, until Christian missionaries undertook that task.
In this regard, the history of the Allahabad Agricultural University is well narrated, establishing the biblical motivation of Founders and Sponsors of the institution. Sam Higginbottom began moving backward peasants forward, because he followed Lord Jesus who said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
The culture of anti-mind attitude promoted by some religions—like Hinduism and Buddhism—through yoga and meditation, has contributed in making and keeping India educationally backward. Silencing minds and thoughts becomes the goal of these religions, which has not helped the people to inculcate scientific progress for the welfare of all. This same culture that could build huge buildings like temples or the Taj Mahal, did not provide a wheel barrow for the labourers who built those structures.
Myths were created to promote lies, and these continue to have power over people, and manipulate them. “Myths are no better than private revelations. They cannot be cross-examined and judged to be true or untrue. Manipulative myths that serve the priests' interests require force for their survival.”
Commenting on the Haiti earthquake and a comparable earthquake in Bay area in the US, Vishal writes that both the natural disasters were of equal magnitude. However, the results were different: “Why such a difference? The Bay Area was built on a culture of relatively stronger law, justice, freedom and consequent social trust and prosperity. In contrast, Haiti is almost totally built on a culture of corruption, oppression, social mistrust and resultant poverty.”
Yoga is inefficient to cure corruption. It has no power to bring moral transformation. The rulers tried to create wealth by taxing people. The kings who ruled India built monuments, palaces, temples and even the Taj Mahal by taxing people. They did not build institutions or avenues to create wealth for all. Today, the elected rulers also do the same, use tax payers money to increase and multiply their personal wealth. “American businesses are supposed to represent 'greedy' capitalism, India is a poor and 'spiritual' country, but in proportionate terms our black economy is vastly greater than that of American economy.”
The author comments about the Maoist violence in many parts of the nation. The tribals were exploited and looted by upper class people. They stopped missionaries from reaching them with the gospel of transformation. While tribals in North East were transformed, the Hindutva forces with Hindutva elements playing pressure tactics in their respective political parties brought the anti-conversion law. That resulted in backwardness and these people are recruited by Leftist extremists who are involved in violence.
The culture of cooperation comes from the biblical worldview. US President Obama could appoint his opponent Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. In India, this is not possible as politicians fight one another, envious and try to pull even their colleagues down. Even Indian scientists who excel in the West are unable to do so in India for the lack of culture of cooperation. The love that transcends race, denomination, class, caste is the need of the hour. The author writes that the Romeo and Juliet is the story of self-giving love. There is a need for more Romeos.
A Korean model of development where one person could transform a community and make it prosperous is a model India could plan to do. Some Indians proudly state that India invented 'zero' and contributed to the world of mathematics. However, the inventors did not use that knowledge to help the poor people. The fund for widows of pastors that was developed in Scotland became the basis for modern insurance. The mathematician-pastors combined mathematics and spirituality and helped the poor widows of pastors to be economically self-sufficient. In contrast, Indian spirituality burnt its widows.
The book is a must read for each and every Christian in India. It should be a text book for all Bible colleges. It should be used in youth Bible studies especially among college students. This book should be translated into several Indian languages. Christian intellectuals could use this book to mentor emerging leaders in the society like young bureaucrats, lawyers, politicians, teachers, professors, bankers, journalists and other professionals. The book is priced at Rs 250 and can be ordered at
